"Behind The Scene" - April, 1998

How Much Is A Million? In December of 1978, I heard that students at an elementary school in Sykesville, PA were saving pop can pull tabs to see how much a million of something looked like. When I arrived at the school, I found all the tabs were in boxes and on a big spool. To give the photo more visual interest, I had the little boy sit on the floor as we poured the pull tabs around him. By placing the boy in the pile of tabs, he lent scale to the photo which helped emphasize what a million of something looks like.

The photo was transmitted by the Associated Press to newspapers around the U.S. An Editor at Life Magazine saw the photo and sent a photographer to do a photo for their magazine.
